There will be a screening of "Memory of Forgotten War" (37 minutes) followed by a panel to discuss the film and the peace process as it stands now.
MEMORY OF FORGOTTEN WAR conveys the human costs of military conflict through deeply personal accounts of the Korean War (1950-53) by four Korean-American survivors. Their stories take audiences through the trajectory of the war, from extensive bombing campaigns, to day-to-day struggle for survival and separation from family members across the DMZ. Decades later, each person reunites with relatives in North Korea, conveying beyond words the meaning of family loss. These stories belie the notion that war ends when the guns are silenced and foreshadow the future of countless others displaced by ongoing military conflict today. Find out more at http://www.mufilms.org/films/memory-of-forgotten-war/.

Peace Action of Staten Island has invited organizers and experts on health care policy to help Staten Islanders understand the debates over healthcare we are hearing in the 2020 Election Debates. Do we need "medicare for all," "medicare if you want it," "Obamacare with a public option," or none of the above? If you are confused with the back and forth on the presidential debate stage, then this forum is your chance to clear things up.

On Wednesday, January 23, 2019, join Peace Action of Staten Island at 3950 Amboy Road, 7pm, for a unique exploration of gun ownership in the United States.
TIME magazine partnered with JR, an artist and photographer to create their November 5thcover, a mural of 245 individuals representing all facets of this issue. They have now made this mural available to communities as a tool to spark meaningful dialogue. This projected mural is “live” and “interactive” with the individuals depicted sharing their stories.
Come and hear these stories then share yours as we strive to find common ground and develop next steps that can be taken to prevent the close to 40,000 deaths that guns are responsible for each year in our country.

Strategic Voting, Peace Organizing, and Beyond
Peace Action of Staten Island General Meeting
Saturday, Sept 29, 5:30-8pm,
Unitarian Church of Staten Island, 312 Fillmore St.
What are the strategies to work for a better world, in this election and afterwards? How do peace activists approach voting in contests where there are no peace candidates? What can and must be done beyond the ballot box to further the cause for peace and social justice?
John Halle will speak on voting strategically to protect the most vulnerable and avert the worst outcomes.
Brittany DeBarros will speak on peace activism beyond the ballot box.
John Halle is Director of Studies in Music Theory and Practice at Bard College, and he frequently writes about political topics. He is the author with Noam Chomsky of "An Eight Point Brief for LEV (Lesser Evil Voting)." https://chomsky.info/an-eight-point-brief-for-lev-lesser-evil-voting/ He was interviewed on electoral politics by PASI board member Daniel Falcone: https://dissidentvoice.org/2017/11/electoral-politics-in-america-noam-chomsky-and-the-core-commitments-of-the-enlightenment/
Brittany DeBarros is an Army Reserve CPT and a member of About Face: Veterans Against the War and the PASI board. After giving a gut-wrenching speech about U.S. militarism and the war economy, and publishing facts about the military on social media, she is now under investigation by the Army. https://www.facebook.com/peaceactionstatenisland/posts/1054687338042086
Doors will open at 5:00pm for socializing and light potluck refreshments. Program begins at 5:30pm.

Two days after Memorial Day weekend, active duty soldiers and veterans will be invited to speak out at the PASI Annual Meeting about what patriotism means to them, on Wednesday, May 30th, from 6 to 8:30 pm at the Unitarian Church of Staten Island, 312 Fillmore Street, Staten Island, NY 10301.
In this era of seemingly endless wars, is it possible to be a patriot and to be against war? What is the difference between identifying as a patriot versus a nationalist? While these may sound like semantic questions, our different answers seem to define many of our political divisions.
The panel for this conversation will include Brittany DeBarros, Ghanim Khalil, and Patrick Youngkin, all who have experience in the military service since September 11, 2001.
The meeting is free and the public is invited. New faces are especially welcome. Doors open at 6 pm and pizza will be served.
A new PASI Board will be elected at this meeting. Members who joined by April 30, 2018 are eligible to vote in the PASI Board election. Go to www.peacesi.org to join or renew your membership. Flex your membership muscles!

#YemenCantWait: Rally Against War

Yemen is at the center of the world’s worst, man made humanitarian disaster. Over 10,000 people have died from the conflict, 1 million people are impacted by the cholera outbreak, and 22 million people are food insecure, with millions on the brink of famine. Funeral halls, homes, hospitals and markets in Yemen are being bombed by the Saudi-led coalition, with U.S. assistance and U.S. weapons. With millions on the brink of famine, and in the middle of a cholera outbreak, the U.S.-supported Saudi-led coalition blockaded Yemeni ports, weaponizing aid that millions depend on. The United States must end all U.S. support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.
Rally with us, and demand an end to all U.S. support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen!
Speakers:
Dr. Debbie Almontaser - Director of Muslim Community Network
Sahar Alsahlani - Board Member of CAIR-NY and National Council member of Religions for Peace and Fellowship of Reconciliation
Summer Nasser - Chairperson of YemenAid
Kate Alexander - Peace Action New York State

This under-reported conflict is taking an enormous toll on the already-struggling people of Yemen. More than half are food-insecure and don't have access to clean water. Two million are internally displaced. More
than 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed. A cholera epidemic has exceeded 600,000 cases and caused over 2000 deaths.
The Saudi-led coalition, with U.S. support, has been blamed for most of the civilian casualties. The Houthis have also been accused of human rights violations.

As an expert on Yemen and Middle Eastern affairs, he has lived and traveled extensively in the Middle East.
During the Arab Spring, Qatabi co-founded the Yemeni American Coalition for Change (YACC) to support peaceful change and the democracy movement in Yemen.

Peace Action of Staten Island is partnering with the Unitarian Church of Staten Island to celebrate and bring awareness to the new UN nuclear weapons ban treaty with a procession for peace that will take place on the anniversary of the atom bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The atom bombs were dropped on these two Japanese cities on August 6 and 9, respectively, in 1945. The human cost of the atom bomb attacks was enormous: conservatively over 240,000 people lost their lives. Today’s nuclear weapons are 75 or more times powerful than those dropped 72 years ago, and the humanitarian consequences of just a small nuclear exchange could cause world-wide famine. That is why it is so important to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to work for complete nuclear weapons abolition.

Since the drone attacks began in Pakistan in 2004, much
of the focus has been on the technology. And, although the borderlands
between Pakistan and Afghanistan are endlessly debated and declared upon
by journalists and pundits, the ordinary people who actually live there
are rarely heard from. WOUNDS records the voices of those who have been
either labeled “militants,” or summarily dismissed as “collateral
damage.”
Saadia Toor is a long time anti-war feminist activist
and educator at the College of Staten Island. Her book State of Islam:
Culture & Cold War Politics in Pakistan was published in 2011 by
Pluto Press and chronicles the role played by the US in marginalizing
the Left and strengthening the various forces of the Right in Pakistan
from the early 1950s onwards.
Please join us for this important discussion on US drone wars and the history of intervention in Pakistan.

Peace Action of Staten Island is holding a Women on War and Peace Forum in honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month.
Our guests will include:
- Madeline Akibo-Betts from Sierra Leone.
- Jenna Bitar from Adalah-NY is a young Palestinian-American interested in the rights of women political prisoners.
- Iram Ali from Pakistan and raised in Brooklyn, former Associate Director, Operations & Development, Iraq Veterans Against the War and currently Kairos Fellow at MoveOn.org.
- Adama Demby from Sierra Leone who came to the U.S. in 1985.
- Jennifer Gray-Brumskine from Liberia who came to the U.S. in the late 1980’s as a student and is currently President of the Liberian Community Association.
- Parvina Olimova from Tajikistan, active in the Turkish Cultural Center, and interested in the role of women's education.
The forum will bring women together to share their direct or indirect experience of war and peace. Too little attention is paid to the effect of war on women's and their families’ lives. Women are not equal partners in the processes that could have prevented conflicts in the first place.
Peace Action of Staten Island welcomes everyone to come to its meetings. New faces are very welcome. Doors will open at 6 pm. Please bring something to share for our light refreshment table.

Shut Down Indian Point Forum
Thursday, February 18, 2016 6:30 to 8:30 PM
Unitarian Church of Staten Island
312 Fillmore St. (at Clinton Ave.), S.I.

Speakers:
Carl Lundgren, Chair, SDIPN
Catherine Skopic, Legislative Committee Chair, SDIPN
Dr. Alfred Meyer, Physicians for Social Responsibility
Peace Action of Staten Island, in collaboration with the Social Justice
Committee of the Unitarian Church of Staten Island, will sponsor a forum
on shutting down the Indian Point Nuclear Power Facility, north of New
York City.
The
Indian Point Energy Center houses two working nuclear power plants and
is just 35 miles from midtown Manhattan in Buchanan, New York. 20
million people live within 50 miles of the plants, including most of
Staten Island. A study commission by New York State found that
evacuation is not possible. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says,
“Indian Point is a catastrophe waiting to happen.”
Shut Down Indian Point Now! (SDIPN.net)
is a grassroots organization, comprised of individuals working in New
York City to shut down Entergy's Indian PointNuclear Plant and against
the use of nuclear power in the US and around the world.
Find out why so many people are calling for the closure of Indian Point
Nuclear Plant and the steps it will take to accomplish that goal. Some
of the reasons include: Indian Point’s vulnerability to terrorism, a
laundry list of safety problems, the storage of 1500 tons of radioactive
waste onsite, and the lack of a workable evacuation plan,
Other community co-sponsors include: Staten Island Democratic Association, New Yorkers for Clean Water, Inc., Food & Water Watch, and Eco-Poetry.org, SIARAPB Community, United for Action, Zeitgeist NYC Chapter, Alliance for a Green Economy, ISLA (list in formation).
This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Next Generation Activism: A Panel Discussion
Plus: Update on Shutting Down Indian Point Nuclear Plant
Peace Action of Staten Island Meeting
Thursday, June 11, 6:30 pm
Unitarian Fellowship Hall
312 Fillmore Street (at Clinton Ave), Staten Island

The toolkit of organizing has been turned on its head in the last few years. Politics and lobbying has been infused with larger and larger sums of big corporate financing. Our problems of income equality, immigration reform, and endless wars have dug in deep. On Election Day, we can measure the ranks of the disaffected and unengaged. Meanwhile, we see the streets filled with new voices determined to make change in the Black Lives Matter movement.
What does this all mean for the next generation of activism? How will organizations like Peace Action and other social justice organizations face the challenges ahead?
Come hear a panel of young activists discuss the challenges that face them on Thursday, June 11th at 6:30 pm at the next meeting of Peace Action of Staten Island, to be held at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall, 312 Fillmore Street, on Staten Island.

Ebola has claimed the lives of 26,611 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Last week, no new cases were reported in Liberia and about 30 in Guinea and Sierra Leone.
3,000 American troops went to Liberia (100 remain). The United States military officially ended a mission to build treatment facilities in February

The Ukraine crisis and the simulated U.S. nuclear attacks against North Korea remind us that the threat of nuclear war and annihilation didn’t end with the Cold War. 2015 will mark 70 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; still, the nuclear powers possess nearly 17,000 nuclear weapons. We demand that when the world’s nations gather in New York for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference they mandate the beginning the good faith negotiations to eliminate the world nuclear arsenals, as required by the Treaty. Celebrate the Centennial of the Christmas Truce
with poetry and music at the Culture Lounge

Saturday, December 20, 2:30 PM
Culture Lounge
St. George Ferry Terminal
Peace Action of Staten Island will host a commemoration of the Christmas Truce of 1914 at the Culture Lounge, inside the St George Ferry Terminal, on the afternoon of December 20th, starting at 2:30 PM.
The Christmas truce was a series of widespread, unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas 1914, during World War I. The truce is often seen as a symbolic moment of peace and humanity amidst one of the most violent events of human history. It was a moment when war was all but put to a halt by joy and song, shared culture and mutual respect.
As part of the program, we'll watch a short documentary and have a variety of musical and spoken word performances. Performers will include Occupy Guitarmy and Day de Dada,
The Culture Lounge is run by Staten Island Arts, our borough's local arts advocacy organization.
Peace Action of Staten Island (PASI) is a grassroots organization dedicated to promoting the non-violent resolution of conflict and the abolition of nuclear weapons, as well as to halting the global spread of conventional arms, building a human rights culture and promoting an economy rooted in human needs instead of militarism. Go to www.peacesi.org to learn more and become a member.

For this, the University of Illinois Board of Trustees purged him from his tenured position due to pressure from donors, in direct violation of basic norms of academic freedom.
Now Professor Salaita is going on the offensive – against academic censorship, and against the continuing colonial domination of the Palestinian people that this censorship covers for. More information can be found on the Facebook event page.

PEOPLE'S CLIMATE MARCH
NEW YORK CITY
Take the 9:30 am Ferry with PASI!
In September, world leaders are coming to New York City for a UN summit on the climate crisis. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.
With our future on the line and the whole world watching, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. We’ll take to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach: a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.
To change everything, we need everyone on board.
Sunday, September 21 in New York City. Join us.

"In 1938, a three story Archer Daniels Midland Company warehouse stood in the shadow of the Bayonne with an address of 2377-2387 Richmond Terrace. Typically the warehouse stored vegetable oil. That year the buildings took on a new purpose when a ship carrying 1200 tons of raw uranium ore from the Belgian Congo unloaded 2,007 steel drums into its secret Staten Island destination. ...[N]ot even the Staten Island Borough President at the time knew of its arrival...A report from NY 1 dating to April 2010 describes the clean-up, now more than 70 years after the arrival of the uranium, as still being in the 'preliminary assessment' stage." Peace Action of Staten Island will be screening the award-winning documentary Dirty Wars at its annual meeting on Saturday, May 10th. Everyone is invited.
Last year, Jeremy Scahill released his newest book, Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield. The book immediately hit the New York Times bestseller list and received critical praise. Just two months later, the film Dirty Wars, directed by Rick Rowley, was released by IFC Films throughout North America. You can watch a trailer at http://dirtywars.org/.
Part political thriller, part detective story, the film follows an
intrepid reporter as he investigates the activities of a secret army,
known as JSOC, who "find, fix, and finish” their targets. No target is
off limits for the “kill list,” including U.S. citizens.
Before the screening, Peace Action of Staten Island will hold elections
for new officers and board members. Light refreshments will be served.

Fund our Communities!
Our speaker will be
Jean Athey, coordinator of Peace Action Montgomery (MD) and chair of the Steering Committee of
Fund Our Communities, Not the Pentagon, (
www.OurFunds.org),
a Maryland coalition composed of over 60 organizations whose mission is
to establish a strong grassroots constituency for change in our
nation’s priorities, away from war and militarism and towards peace and
social justice. Jean is also secretary of the Board of the national
organization Peace Action.
The Fund Our Communities coalition has sponsored town hall
meetings throughout Maryland, organized a campaign to prevent a special
tax break for Lockheed Martin, managed an innovative Pull the Pork
political event, and sponsored a bus tour in MD called “Prosperity Not
Austerity.” The latest campaign is passing a bill in the state
legislature designed to show that jobs need not be dependent on military
spending.
In April, 2011, Jean went to Afghanistan on a peace mission.
In October 2008, she volunteered with the International Solidarity
Movement in Palestine for the olive harvest and at the Jerusalem home of
a family threatened with eviction. In 2006, she co-founded the
Washington Region Religious Campaign Against Torture, a coalition of
religious groups working to end U.S.-sponsored torture and hold
accountable those who have participated in torture. Jean has worked at
the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration; taught at the
University of Oklahoma; and served in the Peace Corps in Tunisia. She
received a Ph.D. in social services policy and administration from the
University of Chicago.

Money Out of Politics Forum

On Saturday, January 11th, Peace Action of Staten Island
will hold a forum regarding the campaign now underway to amend the
constitution to end corporate personhood as it now exists under US law.
As Affiliate Coordinator for the NYC chapter of Move to
Amend movetoamend.org, Reed Perkins has been working with area members
to broaden awareness of the issue and reaching out to other
organizations with an interest in cleaning up the corruption of big
money in our political process. Currently MTA NYC is supporting the New
York for Democracy Coalition in getting NY State Senators on the record
with their positions on an amendment resolution.
The Move to Amend campaign began because of the 2010 U.S.
Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission
prohibiting the government from limiting political expenditure by
corporations, associations or labor unions because it would violate the
right of free speech, thus equating corporations to persons. This
decision has led to an unprecedented amount of money flowing into
elections at all levels of government.
Move to Amend asks its supporters to take the following
pledge: “We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S.
Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United and other related cases, and
move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not
speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to
constitutional rights.”
On the agenda for the evening is also the selection of the
nomination committee for the PASI board. Elections are scheduled at the
annual meeting on May 10, 2014.
This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

"The Dark Side of Anti-Bullying Laws"
presented by Izzy Kalman, MS

In recent months, the United States Government has been
under constant attack for its increasing growth as a totalitarian police
state, conducting mass surveillance while curtailing the precious right
to Freedom of Speech, all with the justification of protecting the
population from terror.
Izzy Kalman, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, is
the author of numerous books and publications that teach individuals and
organizations how to successfully eliminate bullying by using the age
old wisdom of the Golden Rule. He is creator/author of the website,
Bullies2Buddies.com, and writes a Psychology Today blog, A Psychological
Solution to Bullying. He worked as a school psychologist in Staten
Island for fourteen years, until 2002.

Join us for an interesting and interactive presentation by
Mr. Kalman who will talk about freedom of speech as the solution to
verbal bullying and not the cause of it. According to Mr. Kalman the
anti-bullying movement is the most polular witch-hunt in human history.
This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

This coming week is critical in the effort to prevent a war.
The Senate will probably vote on a resolution to authorize the use of
military force (AUMF) in Syria early in the week, and the House may also
vote. Both houses will hold hearings. As friends of peace, we are
sending the following message to Congress through our phone calls,
messages, vigils and demonstrations:
We do not want a U.S. military attack on Syria;
We want the U.S. to use diplomacy to end the Syrian nightmare;
We want the U.S. to provide generous assistance to Syrian refugees.
Click here for alternatives to the use of U.S. military force.
Congress has heard loud and clear from the American people
that we do not want another war. On Thursday, September 5th, Rep.
Michael Grimm switched from supporting U.S. military action to coming
out publicly against it, partly because of the large number of calls to
his office (202-225-3371 and 718-351-1062) opposed to more war. Here's
what we know about the positions of our Senators:
Senator Charles Schumer: Told reporters on Capital Hill that he will vote for the AUMF. Call his office at 212-486-4430.
Senator Kristin Gillibrand: Told a reporter that she wants to see more intelligence before she makes her decision. Call her office at 212-688-6262.

The Grimm Truth about TPP and TTIP

Speaker: Adam Weissman, TradeJustice, NY Metro
Staten Island Museum Auditorium
75 Stuyvesant Pl., Staten Island, NY 10301
(1 block up from Staten Island Ferry
Join Peace Action of Staten Island as we learn from Adam Weissman of TradeJustice New York Metro about how the Obama administration is trading our rights away in closed door international negotiations. Adam has been campaigning to raise awareness about Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement (TPP). You might not be aware of the TPP because it is shrouded in secrecy and all but ignored by the corporate media. By the end of October 2013, President Obama expects to finalize this trade
agreement with 10 other nations, which will outsource jobs to
sweatshops, limit access to lifesaving generic drugs, prohibit
regulations on the banking industry, replace family farms with factory
farms, and grant foreign corporations the power to sue our government
when U.S. laws block their environmentally destructive projects and
toxic exports. TPP is part of "Obama's Pacific Pivot" - his administration's broader agenda for US military and economic dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. And TPP is setting the stage for TTIP - a trade agreement between the US and the European Union. Rep. Grimm has voted for every job-killing, anti-environmental trade agreement to come to Congress since his election. Find out what we can do to pressure him to change his tune before TPP and TTIP reach Congress.

Film Screening: "Miss Representation"
Staten Island JCC, 1466 Manor Road, Staten Island, NY
Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring
reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by
Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute
to the under-representation of women in positions of power and
influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often
disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for
women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel
powerful herself. Presented by the Unitarian Social Justice Committee

Manning, a 24-year-old Army Intelligence Officer, is accused of leaking
diplomatic cables and reports on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to
the anti-secrets website Wikileaks. Some consider him a heroic
whistle-blower who exposed crimes committed by the United States
government. Others consider him a criminal. His case has far-reaching
implications regarding democracy, government transparency, and civil
rights. Chase Madar is a civil rights attorney and author of the new book on the accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower, called “The Passion of Bradley Manning.” The book looks at Bradley’s motives, his treatment by the U.S. government, and the political issues his case brings up.

Voices for Peace & Justice for Israel & Palestine
On Saturday, September 8th, at its first fall public meeting, Peace Action will be shining the light on some of the positive developments for peace: on the individual and organizational Jewish voices, both in Israel and in the United States, that are calling for peace and democracy in Israel and Palestine. Our guest speaker will be Sefi Yahav, a young Jewish Israeli activist who is a student here in New York temporarily and has been working hard for unity between Palestinian and Israeli workers and students. In addition, the recent Doris Shaffer Memorial Lecture by author Peter Beinart (author of “Crisis of Zionism”) that was given on August 21, 2012 in Lenox, Massachusetts will be viewed. It
is Peace Action’s hope that this will turn into more extensive
conversations at different venues and times throughout the coming year
sponsored by open-minded and peace-loving Staten Islanders.
Directions to the Staten Island Museum: From the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, walk to Richmond Terrace and Wall Street and walk up one short block.

WFP is a New York State party advocating for well-paying jobs, affordable housing, accessible health care, better public schools and more investment in public services. It is aligned with parties from other states but is not national. In a political environment where voters are disenchanted with the major parties…is a national third party a possible option?

Under the US global war of terror, 40% of the US budget goes to preserve and expand the US empire, killing people in the Middle East to protect a global system of exploitation. As an integral part of the terror program, drones are a weapon of choice. The Obama administration is coordinating drone strikes in at least six countries: Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, these drones are being used eight times more by the Obama administration than by the previous one. PASI's January 14th meeting brought attention to what the new drone program costs, where they function, who flies them, and how our airspace is now occupied continually by drones, but "Predator" and "Reaper".
Zohra Ahmed, who is from Pakistan, and has just recently returned, shared her own personal experiences with the human devastation and destruction of her country through the use of unmanned drones
Nick Mottern is coordinator of the kNOw Drones project that uses replicas of Reaper drones to do sidewalk education and works for an international ban on weaponized and spy drones. He is a member of WESPAC justice and peace organization in Westchester County where he has been involved in anti-war work for many years and is the director of Consumers for Peace.org. He is a journalist, writing most recently for Truthout.org, and he has worked for Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, Bread for the World and the US Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs as well as several newspapers.
